Knowledge sharing tools key, says Google head - People Management Magazine Online

“We have a great starting point at Google – we have the culture and attitude that breeds innovation,” he told delegates. “Out talent philosophy is if you give people freedom, they will amaze you.”

He explained that the organisation had implemented several strategies based on this principle, including the ‘20 per cent time’ rule – where employees have the equivalent of one day per week to develop Google projects they feel passionate about. This initiative has spawned both Google News and Google Ocean, part of Google Earth.

Reforming education: The great schools revolution | The Economist

FROM Toronto to Wroclaw, London to Rome, pupils and teachers have been returning to the classroom after their summer break. But this September schools themselves are caught up in a global battle of ideas. In many countries education is at the forefront of political debate, and reformers desperate to improve their national performance are drawing examples of good practice from all over the world.

Why now? One answer is the sheer amount of data available on performance, not just within countries but between them. In 2000 the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) at the OECD, a rich-country club, began tracking academic attainment by the age of 15 in 32 countries. Many were shocked by where they came in the rankings. (PISA’s latest figures appear in table 1.) Other outfits, too, have been measuring how good or bad schools are. McKinsey, a consultancy, has monitored which education systems have improved most in recent years.

As the director of enterprise services at the Virginia Community College System, Matt Lawson has seen his institution's legacy enterprise systems and services transformed through the implementation of the system's cloud strategies. VCCS serves a large and diverse population and comprises 23 colleges, 40 campuses, and many satellite locations. The scale and distribution of enterprise services at VCCS offers a unique opportunity for the institution to leverage a community cloud strategy, both for cost efficiencies and for improved services.

Windows 8 Beta: 8 Questions That Will Make Or Break Microsoft's New OS

Windows 8, the recently unveiled operating system from Microsoft, is a huge gamble for the software giant. The followup OS to Windows 7 is split into two different views that exist on the same machine; the user can switch between either at will: First, the mouse-and-keyboard-friendly 'desktop view,' which features that classic Start-bar-and-icons look from Windows past; and second, the touch-friendly 'metro view,' which will run on all future Microsoft tablets and which Microsoft is pushing as the future of Windows and computing.

Social Learning doesn’t mean what you think it does! Learning in the Social Workplace

Harold Jarche makes this point succinctly himself in Social Learning: the freedom to act and cooperate with others

“One current theme in the workplace and education circles is to “blend” social with the formal and structured. But social learning is not a bolted-on component of our formal educational and training programs. It is a sea change. It will disrupt institutions built upon the technology of  the printing press – all communication enterprises, including education. Yes, we have always learned and worked socially, but we have never had the power of ridiculously easy group-forming or almost zero-cost duplication of our words and images.”
